About the Artist

Updated: Dec 22, 2024

Gianni Higham, who is widely recognized by the intriguing moniker "Bandit," is a multifaceted artist whose talents span across various disciplines, including illustration, painting, graphic design, and even fishing. His artistic vision is deeply rooted in a fascination with the darker, often overlooked aspects of everyday life and human existence. This unique perspective allows him to transform mundane occurrences into thought-provoking visual narratives that challenge viewers to reconsider their perceptions of the ordinary. Gianni's educational journey began at a previously prestigious art school where he had the privilege of learning under the guidance of several esteemed professors, including Robert Zappalorti, Sal Privitera, Peter Miserendino, and Vladimir Shpitalnik. These mentors not only honed his technical skills but also encouraged him to explore the depths of his creativity, leading to the development of his distinctive style. Throughout his career, Gianni has created a diverse range of street art that captivates urban audiences, engaging cartoon designs that resonate with both children and adults, and graphic design work tailored for the beer and wine industry, as well as for prominent internet personalities who seek to enhance their visual branding.

After successfully graduating from an unnamed art college with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, Gianni initially immersed himself in the world of design and illustration. However, he soon found himself in a creative rut, leading to a three-year hiatus during which he stepped back from his artistic endeavors. This period of introspection and self-discovery was crucial, as it allowed him to reassess his artistic goals and the direction of his work. It was during this time that he experienced a profound moment of clarity, igniting a renewed passion for painting and illustrating. This resurgence of motivation propelled him towards the creation of Project Blackfin, a significant initiative that represents his quest for deeper meaning in his artistic expression. Through Project Blackfin, Gianni aims not only to showcase his artistic skills but also to convey complex themes and emotions that reflect the intricacies of life, inviting viewers to engage with his work on a more profound level. This project marks a pivotal chapter in Gianni's career, as he seeks to redefine his artistic identity and connect with audiences in innovative and impactful ways.

The forest:

Gianni is an enthusiastic fly fisherman who ventures into the forests of Connecticut and New England in search of large trout and salmon in pristine rivers and streams. His journeys take him to scenic spots, where he experiences peace in nature, far removed from city life. The river's flow calms him as he anticipates a catch, fostering a profound bond with nature. Although catching fish thrills him, the tranquil surroundings refresh his spirit and enhance his passion for fly fishing.

The Ocean:

Gianni finds inspiration in the ocean, which embodies creation and destruction. The ocean's beauty, complex ecosystems, and life cycles, such as whale fall, illustrate nature's duality and interconnectedness, resonating with his creative pursuits. He is fascinated by the oceanic food chain and the balance of marine ecosystems, imagining scenarios that explore these dynamics. Ocean gigantism also intrigues him, with creatures like the colossal squid challenging growth and adaptation norms. These elements fuel Gianni's creativity, prompting him to explore themes of evolution, survival, and the unknown. The ocean's processes of decay, food chain intricacies, and gigantism provide a rich tapestry of ideas for Gianni, deepening his understanding of marine life and the connections between life and death.

The Rebirth:

From the years 2022 to the end of 2024, Gianni experienced an overwhelming and extreme form of depression that profoundly affected every facet of his life. This debilitating condition not only clouded his mind but also nullified any creative substance that was previously available to him. During this tumultuous period, Gianni found it increasingly difficult to engage in activities that once brought him joy and fulfillment, such as painting, writing, and music. His artistic pursuits, which had been a vital outlet for self-expression and a source of inspiration, became overshadowed by a pervasive sense of hopelessness.

Until November 2024, Gianni had dedicated himself to a profound journey of personal transformation, during which he meticulously rebuilt not only his love of artwork but also his appreciation for humor and, significantly, his self-image. This period marked a pivotal turning point in his life, as he began to explore various artistic mediums, immersing himself in painting, sculpture, and digital art. Through countless hours spent in studios and galleries, he rediscovered the joy that creativity brought him, allowing his imagination to flourish and breathe life into his previously dormant passions. Furthermore, as Gianni embraced these changes, he worked diligently on reshaping his self-image. By November 2024, Gianni emerged not just as an artist but as a person who truly valued the interplay of creativity, laughter, and self-acceptance, culminating in a more fulfilled and vibrant existence.
